He's nice to everyone, even the evil ones, thinking all the world needs is a hug and some understanding. He's prone to talking, often diverting into tangents just short of being completely unrelated to the topic at hand.

Canonical/History link: Bartok's story in Anastasia starts in 1917, where he is a familiar and the sole friend and ally to Grigori Rasputin. Rasputin, angered over his loss of favor and face at the hands of the Romanov family, used his magic, sold his soul, and gained the power he needed to drive an already miserable population into a furious revolutionary frenzy. This in turn led to the coup that would swallow Russia into Communist totalitarianism.

However, before Rasputin could kill Anastasia himself, the ice he stood on cracked and shattered. Rasputin sank into the water, and by all accounts, died, leaving Bartok alone with the phylactery granted to Rasputin by the demons he had aligned with.

Bartok waited around, doing batty things up until the mid 1920s, when Anastasia's resurfacing resurrected the resting Rasputin. Long story short, Bartok made wisecracks, followed along for the ride, but ultimately told Rasputin to get a life and stop focusing on petty revenge against one teenage girl.

Bartok left Rasputin right before his death, uttering the line "This can only end in tears, sir!"

Arrival in Purgatorium: Oh, well, wasn't this a boot to the head. "I'm back in Limbo again," Bartok muttered, quite flustered. "I know Master probably came here after he died, but I didn't think I'd end up following him here again. Oh, well. Guess I just need to find him and put him back together." Bartok fluttered up to a rooftop, looking around and vaguely cursing his eyeseight as a bat. Combined with the darkness, it made it impossible to spot really anything.

"Well, I'm not going to get anywhere just laying around," he said. "Like Uncle Otis said, 'the early bat gets the grapefruit.' Wait... that might not be the appropriate saying for this situation. ...Oh, what they, I'll think of it later." Bartok spread his wings once again, taking flight and traversing parts of what he was sure was limbo.

"But it's different than before," he noted, "there are buildings and streets. Even if they do look like they could use some sprucing. And oh look, there's a monster." A split second pause.

"A monster?!" Bartok gained altitude quicly, just barely avoiding the jaws of some weird and freakish abomination that had leaped at him, jaws snapping and frothing. "Oh, hey now, slow down heart, slow down," he said.

"Okay. Let's not do that again. Where is Master? He's got to be here somewhere! Then we'll find his doohickey pieces, we can crazy glue it back together and go back to Moscow. I'll show him all the hit dance moves!"

He continued flapping his wings, occasionally humming some ditty that popped into his head, and shouting "MASTER!" every once in a while just to make sure he was or wasn't there. The search seemed fruitless, so Bartok stopped to gather his breath, hanging upside down from the edge of red clock tower.

"Red?
